Deltec 1000 Series Protein Skimmer — 1000i & 1000ix – German engineering for demanding marine aquariums
A protein skimmer is not simply a pump producing bubbles.
Effective protein skimming depends on how efficiently the equipment manages the interaction between air, water, bubbles, organic compounds and foam. Bubble generation, air volume, water movement, reaction-chamber geometry and foam stability all influence how effectively dissolved and surface-active organic compounds can be concentrated and removed.
The Deltec 1000 Series is designed around this complete system rather than focusing on a single headline specification.
Designed for 600–1000 litre marine and saltwater aquariums, the series is available in two configurations:
- 1000i — controllable 24 V DC operation
- 1000ix — fixed-output 230 V AC operation
The engineering behind the Deltec 1000 – A larger reaction chamber for a larger system
The 1000 Series uses a 140 mm diameter cylindrical reaction body with a 90 mm diameter riser tube. The cylindrical body maintains a consistent internal diameter as the bubble column rises. This is important because the reaction chamber is where the air-water mixture spends time interacting with aquarium water before the concentrated foam moves into the riser and collection cup.
Rather than simply increasing pump size and water turbulence, Deltec’s design focuses on maintaining a controlled bubble environment inside the reaction chamber.
The result is a skimmer designed around the complete process:
air injection → bubble formation → controlled circulation → organic adsorption → foam concentration → skimmate removal
Deltec 1000i — controllable DC performance – The 1000i uses Deltec’s DCC 2 24 V DC pump with the SWC 2 controller.
According to Deltec’s official technical specification:
- Power consumption: 9–21 W
- Maximum air: 900 L/h
- Optimal continuous air: 650 L/h
- Controller: SWC 2
- Pump: DCC 2, 24 V DC
- Control: 5-stage continuous operation in the published operating instructions.
This distinction between maximum air and optimal continuous air is important.
The 1000i can reach 900 L/h maximum air, but Deltec specifies 650 L/h as the optimal continuous operating level. That means the 900 L/h figure should not be interpreted as the amount of air the skimmer is expected to run continuously. The controller allows the aquarist to adjust the pump output according to the requirements of the aquarium.
This can be useful when the system’s organic load changes because of:
- changes in fish stocking
- feeding levels
- maintenance routines
- changes in nutrient-management strategy
- different stages of aquarium maturity
The objective is not simply maximum air. The objective is a stable foam head appropriate to the aquarium’s actual organic load.
Deltec 1000ix — simple, efficient AC operation
The 1000ix uses Deltec’s DCS 600 pump operating at 230 V AC.

The 1000ix is therefore aimed at the aquarist who prefers a straightforward fixed-output configuration. There is no need to manage an external DC pump controller. Plug it in, set the skimmer’s water level correctly and tune the foam head.
1000i or 1000ix?
The answer is not simply “the i is better.”
- The 1000i makes more sense if you value adjustable pump operation and want greater control over the skimmer’s operating intensity.
- The 1000ix makes more sense if you prefer a simpler fixed-speed AC configuration with fewer controls.
Why Deltec uses a cylindrical reaction chamber
The 140 mm cylindrical body is one of the defining features of the 1000 Series. A consistent-diameter reaction chamber gives the rising bubble column a predictable pathway. Inside a protein skimmer, bubbles need sufficient opportunity to interact with the surrounding water. At the same time, excessive turbulence can work against stable foam formation.
The Deltec approach therefore focuses on controlled air-water movement rather than simply maximising turbulence. This is one reason why looking only at air-flow figures can give an incomplete picture of a protein skimmer.
Hollow-chamber base — more than a support
The hollow-chamber base is an important part of the Deltec hydraulic design. The base allows water to return through the lowest section of the skimmer while also helping to dampen vibration and reduce turbulence.
Deltec’s design documentation specifically identifies the hollow-chamber base as contributing to the skimmer’s quiet operation. The water return arrangement also makes it more difficult for air bubbles to escape back into the aquarium.
In practical terms:
less unnecessary turbulence + controlled water return = a more stable environment for foam formation.
This is a good example of the type of engineering detail that is easy to overlook when comparing skimmers only by pump wattage or air draw.
Emergency overflow with water-level indicator
The Deltec 1000 Series incorporates a newly developed emergency overflow system with a water-level indicator. This is particularly valuable because a protein skimmer’s internal water level can change unexpectedly.
For example:
- the sump water level changes
- the main circulation pump stops
- the air supply becomes restricted
- the air hose becomes kinked
- the air intake becomes obstructed
Deltec’s operating documentation specifically explains that the emergency overflow system is designed to prevent the skimmer from “overcooking” when the internal water level rises. The overflow and regulator tubes are also designed so they can be exchanged depending on installation requirements. For a piece of equipment that may operate continuously, this is a significant practical safety feature.
Stable sump water level is essential
Deltec specifies a 150–250 mm (15–25 cm) water level for the 1000i and 1000ix. This isn’t just a recommended number to put in a specification table. The water level surrounding the skimmer affects the pressure against which the pump operates. Deltec’s manual explicitly notes that changes in sump water level can alter air performance, power consumption and water flow. Therefore, the 1000 Series should ideally be installed in a sump chamber where the water level remains stable.
For systems with significant evaporation, an appropriately configured automatic top-off system can help maintain consistent skimmer operation.
Correct sizing matters more than maximum capacity
The Deltec 1000 Series is specified for 600–1000 litres. BUT tank volume alone should not determine whether this is the right skimmer. A 700 L aquarium with a heavy fish load and aggressive feeding can have a very different organic load from a lightly stocked 700 L aquarium. Similarly, a system with substantial nutrient export elsewhere may require a different skimming strategy.

Deltec specifies an additional 15 mm clearance for removing the collection cup. When measuring a sump cabinet, therefore, do not design around exactly 520 mm of vertical clearance. Allow enough room to remove the cup comfortably.
Maintenance designed for real-world use
Protein skimmer pumps operate continuously in saltwater and are exposed to organic deposits, calcium carbonate accumulation and other material that can gradually affect pump and air-path performance. Deltec has therefore incorporated quick and easy pump removal into the 1000 Series design. This matters because maintenance isn’t optional if you want consistent skimmer performance. The pump, impeller and air path should be inspected and cleaned whenever deposits begin affecting air draw or foam production.
CSM 1000 Manual Cleaning System – The CSM 1000 is Deltec’s manual cleaning system for the 1000 Series skimmer neck. It is optional and is NOT included with the standard 1000i or 1000ix skimmer.

Which Deltec 1000 should you choose?
Choose the 1000i if: You want adjustable DC pump control and the flexibility to change the skimmer’s operating intensity as the organic load of your aquarium changes.
Choose the 1000ix if: You prefer simple fixed-speed AC operation, do not need variable pump control and want a straightforward setup.
Don’t compare them only by air draw – The 1000i’s 900 L/h is its maximum air capacity, while Deltec specifies 650 L/h as its optimal continuous air volume. The 1000ix is specified at 600 L/h. Therefore, it would be misleading to describe the 1000i as providing “50% more skimming” simply because 900 is 50% higher than 600.
Air volume is one specification — not a complete measure of protein-skimmer performance.
