Deltec 1500 Series Protein Skimmer — 1500i & 1500ix – Serious protein skimming for larger marine aquariums
As marine aquariums become larger and livestock loads increase, protein-skimmer design becomes increasingly important. The challenge is not simply to produce more air. A large protein skimmer must manage the relationship between air volume, water movement, bubble formation, contact time, foam stability and waste collection while remaining stable enough to operate continuously.
The Deltec 1500 Series is designed for marine and saltwater aquariums from 1000 to 1500 litres, combining Deltec’s established reaction-chamber and hydraulic design with substantially greater air-processing capacity than the smaller 600 and 1000 Series.
It is available in two configurations:
- 1500i — controllable 24 V DC operation
- 1500ix — fixed-output 230 V AC operation
The engineering behind the Deltec 1500
The 1500 Series uses a 160 mm diameter cylindrical reaction body and a 110 mm diameter riser tube. The larger reaction chamber provides the physical volume required to manage the substantially higher air throughput of this class of skimmer. The air-water mixture created by the pump enters the reaction chamber, where the bubble population interacts with aquarium water before the foam rises through the larger-diameter riser.
The process can be simplified as:
air intake → bubble generation → controlled air-water interaction → organic adsorption → foam concentration → waste collection
The important point is that the Deltec 1500 is engineered as a complete hydraulic and foam-fractionation system, rather than being defined simply by its pump’s air rating.
Deltec 1500i — DCC 3 + SWC 3 controlled operation
The 1500i uses Deltec’s DCC 3 pump operating at 24 V DC, paired with the SWC 3 controller.
Deltec specifies:
- Power consumption: 10–28 W
- Maximum air: 1,200 L/h
- Optimal continuous air: 1,000 L/h
- Pump: DCC 3
- Voltage: 24 V DC
- Controller: SWC 3
- Continuous control: 7 stages in the technical specification
This gives the 1500i considerably more control than a fixed-output configuration. And, as with the smaller Deltec models, it is important to distinguish between maximum air and optimal continuous air. The 1500i can reach 1,200 L/h maximum air, while Deltec specifies 1,000 L/h as the optimal continuous air volume. The maximum number is therefore a capability figure — not necessarily the setting at which the skimmer should be operated continuously.
Deltec 1500ix — DCS 1200 fixed-output operation
The 1500ix uses the Deltec DCS 1200 pump at 230 V AC.
Its official specifications are:
- Power consumption: 27 W
- Air draw: 1,200 L/h
- Pump: DCS 1200
- Voltage: 230 V AC
- External controller: None
The 1500ix therefore takes a different approach from the 1500i. The 1500i provides adjustable DC pump control. The 1500ix provides a straightforward fixed-output AC configuration.
For a hobbyist who does not need variable pump adjustment, the 1500ix offers the simplicity of a fixed operating configuration.
1,200 L/h — but don’t compare skimmers by air alone
Both the 1500i and 1500ix are specified at 1,200 L/h maximum air, while the 1500i’s optimal continuous air specification is 1,000 L/h.This is worth understanding when comparing protein skimmers. It would be incorrect to say that a skimmer producing more air automatically removes proportionally more organic waste.
Actual skimming performance depends on the complete system, including:
- bubble characteristics
- air-water ratio
- water throughput
- reaction-chamber geometry
- contact conditions
- foam stability
- organic load
- aquarium chemistry
- tuning and maintenance
This is why Deltec’s specification of optimal continuous air volume is more informative than simply quoting maximum air intake.
160 mm reaction chamber
The 1500 Series has a 160 mm diameter main body and 110 mm riser tube. This larger chamber is significant because the 1500 Series is designed for systems with substantially greater water volume and organic loading than the smaller 600 and 1000 models. The wider reaction chamber provides the bubble column with the space required for the higher air volume to interact with aquarium water before reaching the foam collection area.
The goal is not simply more bubbles.
It is controlled bubble-water interaction followed by stable foam concentration.
Hollow-chamber base
The Deltec 1500 continues the company’s hollow-chamber base design. The base is part of the skimmer’s hydraulic architecture rather than simply being a support. It allows water to return through the lower section while helping to reduce unnecessary turbulence and operating noise. This also helps reduce the likelihood of air bubbles being carried back into the aquarium through the water outlet. For a large skimmer operating continuously, controlling unnecessary turbulence becomes particularly important.
Double Base Anti-Flood + safety overflow
The 1500i and 1500ix both incorporate Deltec’s Double Base Anti-Flood system and safety overflow. The skimmer also has separate emergency-overflow and regulator tubes, which Deltec’s instructions explain can be exchanged depending on installation requirements.
The purpose is straightforward: If the internal operating water level rises unexpectedly, the overflow system provides an additional layer of protection. This can become particularly important in larger systems where the skimmer may be operating continuously and unattended.
Integrated skimmer-cup drain
One feature that becomes particularly useful on the 1500 Series is the skimmer-cup drain. Deltec’s technical table lists a cup drain on both the 1500i and 1500ix. This allows collected skimmate to be directed away from the collection cup into an appropriate external waste container or drain arrangement. For heavily stocked marine systems, this can make maintenance considerably more convenient.
Instead of repeatedly removing and emptying the collection cup, the waste can be managed through the drain connection.
Correct sump depth: 160–260 mm
Deltec specifies a 160–260 mm water level for the 1500i and 1500ix. This is different from the 600 and 1000 Series, which use a 150–250 mm recommended water depth. The correct operating depth matters because the sump water level affects the pressure against which the skimmer pump operates.
Deltec specifically explains that changes in filter-sump water level affect parameters including:
- air performance
- power consumption
- water flow
For consistent skimming, install the 1500 in a sump section where the water level can remain stable.
An appropriately configured automatic top-off system can help maintain that stability.
Size and sump planning
The official dimensions of the Deltec 1500 are:
Footprint: 270 × 185 mm
Height: 565 mm
Body diameter: 160 mm
Riser diameter: 110 mm
Recommended water level: 160–260 mm
Deltec specifies an additional 15 mm clearance for removing the collection cup. Therefore, when designing or checking the available space inside a sump cabinet, allow sufficient vertical clearance above the stated 565 mm height. The physical footprint should also be checked against the actual sump chamber dimensions before ordering.
Deltec 1500 and maintenance
Protein skimmers operate continuously in saltwater, so maintenance remains essential even with premium equipment. Air lines, venturi passages, pump components and the reaction chamber can accumulate deposits over time. A reduction in air draw or a change in foam behaviour should therefore trigger an inspection rather than simply increasing the controller setting.
Deltec’s technical documentation specifically identifies blocked air lines, blocked venturi passages and kinked air hoses as causes of insufficient air performance.
CSM 1500 Manual Cleaning System
The CSM 1500 is Deltec’s manual cleaning system for the 1500 Series. It is an optional accessory and is NOT included with the standard 1500i or 1500ix skimmer.
If you want the CSM 1500 supplied with your skimmer, select: 1500i – With CSM Cleaning System or 1500ix – With CSM Cleaning System
This makes routine cleaning of the skimmer neck more convenient without changing the underlying skimmer configuration.

Which Deltec 1500 should you choose?
Choose the 1500i if: You want variable DC pump control and the ability to adjust the skimmer’s operating intensity according to the aquarium’s organic load. The SWC 3 controller provides 7-stage continuous control, making the 1500i particularly suitable for hobbyists who like to fine-tune equipment rather than simply run it at one fixed output.
Choose the 1500ix if: You prefer a simple fixed-output AC configuration and don’t need variable pump control.
Does the 1500i skim better because it is adjustable? – Not automatically. Both models are specified at 1,200 L/h maximum air, and the 1500i’s stated optimal continuous air is 1,000 L/h. The principal difference is control philosophy, not simply maximum air capacity.
Who is the Deltec 1500 for?
The Deltec 1500 is designed for the serious hobbyist operating a 1000–1500 litre marine or saltwater aquarium who wants a premium, engineered protein-skimming system rather than simply selecting a skimmer by pump size.
It is particularly suited to aquarists who value:
- high air-processing capacity
- controlled air-water interaction
- variable operation on the 1500i
- low and efficient power use relative to capacity
- compact footprint for its capacity
- integrated skimmate drainage
- anti-flood and overflow protection
- easy maintenance
- German engineering and manufacturing
The 1500 Series represents a significant step up in physical scale from the 1000 Series, with its 160 mm reaction body, 1,200 L/h air capacity and integrated collection-cup drain. It is a skimmer designed for aquarists who expect their filtration equipment to work reliably as part of a larger marine system.
Why Deltec?
Deltec has been developing filtration equipment for marine aquaristics since 1980 and identifies itself as one of the pioneers of marine filtration. The company states that its skimmers, reactors, pumps, filters and other equipment are manufactured at its Delmenhorst facility in Germany. Deltec also identifies itself as the first provider of needle-wheel protein skimmers.
That history is relevant to the 1500 Series because the product is built around the same philosophy: air handling, hydraulic control, reaction-chamber design, safety and serviceability working together rather than one headline specification defining the product.

Frequently Asked Questions
The 1500i uses a DCC 3 24 V DC pump with an SWC 3 controller, allowing variable pump operation. The 1500ix uses a DCS 1200 230 V AC pump with fixed-output operation.
Yes. The 1500i uses the SWC 3 controller and Deltec specifies 7 continuous control stages.
No. The 1500ix uses the DCS 1200 230 V AC pump and does not have the SWC 3 controller.
Not in terms of maximum specified air intake. Both are rated at 1,200 L/h maximum air. The key difference is that the 1500i provides variable DC pump control, while the 1500ix uses fixed-output AC operation.
The two figures represent different operating conditions. 1,200 L/h is maximum air capacity, while 1,000 L/h is Deltec's specified optimal continuous operating volume. Maximum air should therefore not automatically be treated as the recommended everyday setting.
Deltec specifies 160–260 mm (16–26 cm) of water depth for both the 1500i and 1500ix.
The skimmer pump operates against the surrounding water level. Deltec explains that changes in sump water level can affect air performance, power consumption and water flow. A stable water level therefore helps maintain consistent skimmer operation.
The skimmer should be positioned so that the actual operating water depth remains within Deltec's specified 160–260 mm range. If necessary, use a stable platform to raise the skimmer.
The official dimensions are 270 × 185 mm footprint and 565 mm height, with a 160 mm body diameter and 110 mm riser diameter.
Deltec specifies an additional 15 mm clearance for removing the collection cup. Make sure there is enough vertical space for routine cup removal.
Yes. Both the 1500i and 1500ix have a skimmer-cup drain according to Deltec's technical specifications. It allows collected skimmate to be directed from the collection cup into an appropriate external waste container or drainage arrangement, which can be particularly convenient on larger systems with higher waste production.
It is a Deltec safety feature incorporated into the skimmer base to provide additional protection against abnormal internal water levels. Both the 1500i and 1500ix are equipped with it.
Yes. Both models have a safety/emergency overflow system. Deltec's manual explains that the overflow and regulator tubes can also be exchanged depending on installation requirements.
The CSM 1500 is Deltec's manual cleaning system for the 1500 Series skimmer.
Yes. The Deltec technical documentation identifies CSM 1500 as the compatible manual cleaning system for both the 1500i and 1500ix.
Deltec notes that certain additives found in some sea salts and water conditioners can cause excessive fine bubbles and very wet foam. Such effects can persist for some time depending on the substance involved.
Yes, provided the skimmer is correctly sized and tuned for the system. Its 1000–1500 L rated range and 1,200 L/h maximum air capacity make it appropriate for substantially larger systems than the Deltec 600 and 1000 Series. Actual bioload remains important when selecting and tuning a skimmer.
Air flow alone does not describe the complete skimmer. The Deltec 1500 combines its air-handling capacity with a 160 mm reaction chamber, controlled hydraulic design, hollow-chamber base, anti-flood protection, safety overflow, skimmer-cup drain and serviceable pump design.
Choose the 1500i if variable pump control is important to you. Choose the 1500ix if you prefer simple fixed-output AC operation.
For a more precise recommendation, consider total system volume, fish load, feeding level and sump water depth rather than tank volume alone.
