Deltec 3000 Series Protein Skimmer — 3000i & 3000ix – High-capacity protein skimming for 2,000–3,000 litre marine aquariums
When a marine aquarium reaches 2,000 litres and beyond, the demands placed on its protein skimmer change considerably. At this scale, simply looking at pump wattage or maximum air draw is not enough. A large skimmer needs to manage air volume, bubble formation, reaction-chamber volume, water movement, contact conditions, foam stability and waste collection as one system. The Deltec 3000 Series is designed for marine and saltwater aquariums from 2,000 to 3,000 litres, combining high air-processing capacity with Deltec’s cylindrical reaction-chamber design, hydraulic control and service-oriented construction.
The series is available in two configurations:
- 3000i — controllable 24 V DC operation
- 3000ix — fixed-output 230 V AC operation
The engineering behind the Deltec 3000
The Deltec 3000 uses a large cylindrical reaction chamber designed to maintain an effective air-water mixture as the high volume of air passes through the skimmer.
The basic fractionation process is:
air intake → bubble generation → air-water interaction → adsorption of organic compounds → foam concentration → skimmate collection
The important engineering principle is that the air must remain effectively engaged with the aquarium water before the resulting foam is concentrated in the riser. This is why the 3000 should not be evaluated simply by comparing its air-flow number with another manufacturer’s skimmer. Air volume is an important specification, but it is not the same thing as skimming performance.
Deltec 3000i — DCC 5 + 10-stage control
The 3000i uses Deltec’s DCC 5 24 V DC pump with a 10-stage controller.

The variable controller is particularly useful on a large aquarium because the organic load does not necessarily remain constant.

The ability to adjust the pump therefore gives the aquarist more control over how aggressively the skimmer operates.
Feed / pause control
The 3000i also incorporates a pump feed/pause function, useful when feeding the aquarium or carrying out certain maintenance procedures. Deltec’s 3000 Series documentation specifically lists this function among the i-series features.
Deltec 3000ix — DCS 1700 fixed-output operation
The 3000ix uses the Deltec DCS 1700 230 V AC pump.

The 3000ix is therefore aimed at the hobbyist who prefers a simple fixed-output configuration without the variable pump controller of the 3000i. This does not make the ix a lesser skimmer. It is simply a different operating philosophy:
3000i = adjustable DC control
3000ix = fixed-output AC operation
1,900 L/h vs 1,700 L/h — what does it actually mean?
The 3000i has a maximum air specification of 1,900 L/h, while the 3000ix is specified at 1,700 L/h. It is tempting to conclude that the 3000i must therefore remove proportionally more organic waste. That conclusion would be too simplistic.
Protein-skimmer performance depends on the complete system:
- air volume
- bubble size and distribution
- water throughput
- reaction-chamber geometry
- contact conditions
- foam stability
- organic load
- water chemistry
- operating depth
- tuning
- maintenance
The 3000i’s higher air specification is therefore best understood alongside its variable 10-stage control, while the 3000ix prioritises a straightforward fixed-output configuration.
Cylindrical reaction-chamber design
The Deltec 3000 uses a large cylindrical body, with the current official dimensions listed at 340 × 280 × 570 mm for both models. The cylindrical geometry is important because it avoids the narrowing or tapering of the reaction chamber toward the top. This gives the rising bubble column a consistent chamber cross-section before the bubbles enter the riser. Deltec’s product information describes the cylindrical form as a highly efficient design intended to allow the fine bubbles to rise through the reaction chamber with minimal obstruction before reaching the riser. For a large skimmer, this matters because the objective is not to create maximum turbulence.
The objective is to create effective and controlled air-water interaction followed by stable foam concentration.
Hollow-chamber base
The 3000 Series uses Deltec’s hollow-chamber base. This is not simply a structural foot. The design influences how water moves through the lower section of the skimmer. Deltec states that the hollow-footplate design improves contact time between the air-water mixture while reducing turbulence and helping minimise microbubbles escaping back into the aquarium. It also contributes to the quiet operating behaviour expected from the Deltec range.
For a large skimmer running continuously, reducing unnecessary turbulence is particularly important.
Emergency overflow with water-level indicator
The Deltec 3000 incorporates a newly developed emergency overflow with water-level indicator. This is one of the features that deserves more attention than a generic “safety system” claim. A protein skimmer operates with a carefully controlled internal water level. If that level rises unexpectedly, there is a risk of excessive wet foam entering the collection cup. The emergency overflow provides an additional protection mechanism, while the water-level indicator makes the internal operating condition easier to monitor.
Deltec’s US product information also describes the emergency overflow as a system intended to automatically shut off the air input if the internal water level rises excessively, helping prevent the collection cup from flooding.
Skimmer-cup drain
The 3000 Series includes a drain connection on the skimmer cup. This allows collected skimmate to be directed into a suitable external waste container or drain arrangement. For a large aquarium, this can be particularly convenient because a well-tuned skimmer may collect substantial waste over time.
The user does not necessarily need to remove and empty the cup every time it fills.
Tool-less pump removal
Large protein-skimmer pumps operate in a demanding environment. Salt deposits, calcium carbonate and organic material can accumulate around the pump and air-intake system. The Deltec 3000 therefore uses a quick, tool-less pump removal system. Deltec states that its design allows the pump to be removed rapidly for cleaning, with tests achieving removal in less than 20 seconds.
That does not mean cleaning should take only 20 seconds. It means the pump removal step has been engineered to be fast and uncomplicated.
For a serious hobbyist, that distinction matters because equipment that is easy to access is more likely to receive the maintenance it requires.
Correct sump water depth
The operating depth differs between the two models.
3000i – 160–260 mm
3000ix – 180–260 mm
These are Deltec’s specified operating ranges.
Maintaining the correct water depth is important because the surrounding water level influences the hydraulic conditions under which the skimmer operates. For the best consistency, the skimmer should be installed in a sump section with a stable water level. If the sump water level fluctuates significantly, skimmer performance and foam behaviour can also change.
Dimensions and sump planning
The current Deltec specifications list:

for both the 3000i and 3000ix. The skimmer therefore requires a reasonably substantial sump chamber. Before ordering, measure more than just the available footprint.

A technically suitable skimmer is not practically suitable if it cannot be removed from the sump for maintenance.
Maintenance and long-term performance
A Deltec 3000 is designed for serious continuous use, but premium equipment still requires maintenance. Over time, deposits can accumulate on:
- pump components
- venturi
- air line
- air silencer
- reaction chamber
- riser tube
If air intake decreases or foam production changes noticeably, the first step should be inspection and cleaning, rather than simply increasing pump output.
The underlying principle is simple:
A clean skimmer performs more predictably than a dirty skimmer.
This becomes particularly important with high-capacity equipment because the system is designed around a specific relationship between air, water and foam.
CSM 3000 Manual Cleaning System – The CSM 3000 is Deltec’s optional manual cleaning system for the 3000 Series. It is NOT included with the standard 3000i or 3000ix skimmer.
If you want the CSM 3000 supplied with the skimmer, select:
3000i – With CSM Cleaning System or 3000ix – With CSM Cleaning System
The purpose of the CSM is to make routine cleaning of the skimmer neck easier by removing deposits that can interfere with stable foam formation. Deltec also lists an automatic CS 3000 cleaning system as an optional accessory. That is a separate accessory and should not be confused with the CSM 3000 manual cleaning system.

Which Deltec 3000 should you choose?
Choose the 3000i if: You want variable pump control and prefer to have the ability to adjust skimmer operation as your aquarium’s organic load changes. The 10-stage controller provides significantly more operating flexibility than a fixed-output pump. The 3000i also offers the higher specified maximum air flow of 1,900 L/h.
Choose the 3000ix if: You prefer a simple fixed-output AC configuration and do not need variable pump control. The 3000ix uses the DCS 1700 pump and is specified at up to 1,700 L/h air.
Is the 3000i automatically better because it has more air?
