Product Information
What is BioRing Pro?
Something Fishy BioRing Pro is a high-porosity ceramic biological filter medium designed to provide a stable surface for beneficial microorganisms inside an aquarium filter. The rings contain a network of pores and a central opening. Together, these features provide surfaces that aquarium water can reach while allowing water to move through and around the individual pieces. As beneficial bacteria establish on the media, they become part of the aquarium’s biological filtration system. The product is based on the conventional ceramic bio-ring format, making it a versatile choice for aquarium keepers who want to add or increase biological filtration capacity. The reference product is specified for both freshwater and saltwater systems.
What problem does BioRing Pro solve?
The main problem this product addresses is insufficient biological filtration capacity. An aquarium continuously produces nitrogenous waste through fish waste, uneaten food and decomposing organic matter. Beneficial microorganisms are needed to process this waste as part of the nitrogen cycle.
BioRing Pro gives these microorganisms additional porous surfaces on which to establish.
It can be particularly useful when:
- Your filter has limited biological-media capacity.
- You are upgrading your filtration system.
- You are setting up a new canister filter or sump.
- Your aquarium has a relatively high biological load.
- You want to add more biological media without replacing your existing filtration.
- You need biological media for a larger aquarium or pond filtration system.
Important: BioRing Pro is not an instant ammonia treatment. Its effectiveness develops as beneficial bacteria colonise the media.
How does ceramic bio-media work?
The basic aquarium nitrogen cycle can be simplified as:
Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate
Fish waste and other organic matter can contribute ammonia to the aquarium. Beneficial bacteria involved in biological filtration convert ammonia to nitrite and then nitrite to nitrate. BioRing Pro does not perform this conversion by itself.Instead, the porous ceramic provides a surface on which the microorganisms responsible for biological filtration can establish. This makes the media a long-term component of the filter rather than a disposable chemical treatment.
What makes the high-porosity structure useful?
The main advantage of a porous ceramic medium is the large amount of surface and sheltered spaces available for microbial colonisation.
The rings provide:
- External ceramic surfaces
- Internal surfaces around the central opening
- Microscopic pores within the ceramic structure
- Spaces between individual rings for water circulation
- A compact form that fits efficiently into filter chambers
However, more pores does not automatically mean better filtration. Effective biological filtration also depends on water flow, oxygen availability, media quantity, aquarium bioload and the maturity of the bacterial colony.
Why the hollow ring design?
The hollow centre is an important part of the traditional ceramic-ring design.Instead of having a solid ceramic block, each ring creates a pathway through its centre while the outside provides additional surface area.
When properly loaded into a filter:
Water flows around the rings + through the central openings → aquarium water reaches more of the available biological surface.
This makes the format particularly convenient for filter baskets, media chambers and media bags.
Freshwater & saltwater use
BioRing Pro is suitable for both freshwater and saltwater filtration systems. The reference product specifically lists freshwater and saltwater aquarium use.
Freshwater use
Suitable for:
- Community aquariums
- Planted tanks
- Goldfish aquariums
- Cichlid tanks
- Betta aquariums
- Shrimp tanks
- Breeding systems
- Grow-out tanks
- High-bioload aquariums
Saltwater use
Suitable for:
- Marine fish aquariums
- Fish-only marine systems
- Marine sump filtration
- Suitable reef filtration systems
For marine aquariums, BioRing Pro should be considered one component of the overall biological filtration system, not automatically a replacement for live rock or other established biological substrates.
Pond use
The reference listing also identifies the product for pond filtration systems, making larger quantities useful for larger biological filtration applications.
Biological media vs mechanical and chemical media
Understanding this difference is important when setting up your filter.
| Media type | Main job |
|---|---|
| Coarse sponge / foam | Traps larger physical debris |
| Fine sponge / filter floss | Captures smaller suspended particles |
| BioRing Pro | Provides surfaces for beneficial bacteria |
| Activated carbon | Chemical adsorption for specific applications |
| Phosphate media | Helps control phosphate through chemical filtration |
| Ammonia-removing media | Designed for chemical ammonia adsorption |
BioRing Pro is biological media.
It should therefore normally be used alongside appropriate mechanical filtration rather than replacing it.
Where can you use BioRing Pro? –The reference product lists the media for a variety of filtration systems, including canister, sump, top and trickle filtration.
It can be used in:
- Canister filters
- Sump filters
- Top filters
- Overhead filters
- Trickle filters
- Wet/dry filtration systems
- Pond filtration systems
- Other filter chambers designed for loose biological media
- A filter-media bag can be used when the filter requires loose media to be contained.
How to use
Rinse before first use –Rinse the ceramic rings thoroughly before adding them to the filter. This removes loose ceramic dust and particles from manufacturing and transportation.Do not use soap, detergent or household cleaning products.
Place after mechanical filtration –Where possible, position BioRing Pro after coarse mechanical filtration. This allows the sponge or other mechanical media to capture larger debris before water reaches the biological media.
Don’t pack too tightly .Allow water to circulate freely through and around the rings. Over-packing biological media can restrict water movement and reduce the amount of aquarium water reaching the available surfaces.
Allow the media to mature –New ceramic media is not biologically mature when you open the packet. Beneficial bacteria establish gradually once the media is placed in a functioning aquarium.
Maintain gently When established media needs cleaning, gently swish it in water removed from the aquarium during a water change. Avoid aggressive scrubbing or sterilising established biological media unnecessarily.
Something Fishy recommends
Don’t treat biological media like filter floss. Filter floss is designed to collect waste and is regularly replaced or cleaned. BioRing Pro is different: the bacterial colony living on the media is part of what you’re trying to preserve.
For a typical filter, think of the process as: Mechanical media → Biological media → Chemical media, when required
Let your sponge or mechanical media catch the visible debris first. Then allow clean, oxygenated aquarium water to pass through the ceramic rings so the biological community can develop. And when you clean established BioRing Pro, clean it gently rather than trying to make every ring look brand new.
How long does BioRing Pro last?
Ceramic biological media is intended for long-term use. There is no need for a routine monthly replacement simply because the media has been in the filter for a certain amount of time.
The media can continue to be used as long as:
- The ceramic remains physically intact.
- Water can circulate through the media.
- The pores are not severely clogged.
- The rings remain suitable for biological filtration.
Replace media that becomes heavily clogged, damaged or significantly deteriorated. In a mature aquarium, avoid replacing all established biological media simultaneously unless necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions
BioRing Pro addresses the need for additional biological filtration capacity.
Its porous ceramic structure provides surfaces where beneficial bacteria can establish and participate in the aquarium's nitrogen cycle.
It can be particularly useful when upgrading filtration, increasing biological-media capacity or supporting an aquarium with a higher bioload.
Rinse the rings before first use, then place them in the biological-media section of your filter.
Where possible, position them after mechanical filtration so larger debris is removed before the water reaches the ceramic media.
Allow sufficient space for water to circulate through and around the rings.
Yes. The reference product specifies use in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.
Yes. The reference listing also identifies these ceramic rings for pond filtration systems.
There is no universal grams-per-litre rule. The appropriate amount depends on your filter capacity, fish load, feeding, water flow and the amount of other biological media already present. A practical approach is to use as much as your filter can accommodate without restricting water flow, rather than trying to hit an arbitrary media-to-water ratio.
Ideally, place them after the mechanical filtration stage, such as sponge or filter floss. This allows larger debris to be trapped before water reaches the porous ceramic media, helping reduce clogging. They can be used in canister filters, sumps, top filters, trickle filters and similar systems.
They do not need to be replaced on a fixed schedule simply because a certain number of months have passed. With proper care, ceramic biological media can remain useful for a long time. Replace it when the rings become badly clogged and cannot be cleaned effectively, or when they begin breaking apart. If replacing a large quantity, do it gradually rather than removing all established biological media at once.
