What is RedBio H1?

Something Fishy RedBio H1 is a porous red filter-ring media designed for use as part of an aquarium’s biological filtration system. The rings have a hollow cylindrical shape and visibly porous surface, creating numerous surfaces where beneficial microorganisms can establish.Once established, these microorganisms form part of the aquarium’s biological filtration and help process nitrogenous waste generated by fish, uneaten food and other organic matter.

Unlike filter floss or sponge, which primarily trap physical debris, porous biological media is intended to provide a stable surface for beneficial bacteria.

What makes the porous ring design useful?

The H1 rings are designed around two simple principles: porosity and water movement. Each ring has an open centre, while the outer surface contains numerous irregular pores.

This gives the media:

  • External surfaces for bacterial colonisation.
  • An internal passage through each ring.
  • Multiple spaces where microorganisms can establish.
  • Open areas between individual rings for water circulation.
  • A shape that can be conveniently loaded into filter baskets or media bags.

For biological media, simply having a large surface area isn’t enough. Aquarium water needs to be able to reach those surfaces. The hollow-ring structure helps create pathways for water to move through and around the media when it is correctly loaded into the filter.

How RedBio H1 supports biological filtration

The aquarium nitrogen cycle involves the biological processing of nitrogenous waste.

In simplified form: Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate

Beneficial microorganisms involved in biological filtration colonise surfaces throughout a mature aquarium, including dedicated biological filter media.RedBio H1 provides additional porous surfaces for these microorganisms to establish. The media itself is not an instant ammonia remover. Its purpose is to provide a suitable environment for biological filtration to develop. New media therefore needs time to become biologically established.

Freshwater & saltwater use – RedBio H1 can be incorporated into both freshwater and marine filtration systems, provided the media is confirmed aquarium-safe by the supplier.

Freshwater aquariums

Suitable applications include:

  • Community aquariums
  • Planted aquariums
  • Goldfish aquariums
  • Cichlid aquariums
  • Betta aquariums
  • Shrimp aquariums
  • Breeding tanks
  • Grow-out systems
  • Higher-bioload freshwater systems

Saltwater aquariums

It can be used as biological media in suitable:

  • Marine fish aquariums
  • Fish-only marine systems
  • Marine sump systems
  • Reef filtration systems

For marine aquariums, it should be considered one component of the overall biological filtration system, rather than a replacement for live rock or other established biological substrates.

Why choose a porous filter ring?

Biological filter media needs three things to work effectively:

  • A suitable surface for beneficial bacteria to colonise.
  • Water movement to deliver oxygen and dissolved nutrients to the bacterial community.
  • Time for the biological colony to establish.

RedBio H1 is designed around the first two: its porous construction provides surfaces while the hollow ring allows water to pass through the media. The final biological performance depends on the amount of media used, aquarium bioload, water flow, oxygen availability and the maturity of the aquarium’s biological system.

Where to use RedBio H1

The rings can be placed in the biological-media section of:

  • Canister filters
  • Aquarium sumps
  • Top filters
  • Overhead filters
  • Internal filters
  • Wet/dry filtration systems
  • Other aquarium filtration systems designed for loose media

For easier handling, place loose rings inside a filter-media bag before putting them into the filter.

Important: biological media vs mechanical and chemical media

Different filter media perform different jobs.

Filter media Primary function
Coarse sponge / foam Traps larger physical debris
Fine sponge / filter floss Captures smaller suspended particles
RedBio H1 Provides porous surfaces for biological filtration
Activated carbon Adsorbs certain dissolved organic compounds and substances
Phosphate-removing media Helps control phosphate through chemical filtration
Specialised ammonia media Designed for chemical ammonia adsorption

RedBio H1 should therefore be considered biological filter media, not a replacement for mechanical or chemical filtration.

A combination of different media is often more useful than expecting one media type to perform every filtration function.

How to use

Rinse before first use –Rinse the rings thoroughly before placing them in the aquarium filter. This removes loose dust and particles that may be present from manufacturing, packaging or transportation. Never use soap or household cleaning products.

Place after mechanical filtration Where possible, place RedBio H1 after coarse mechanical media. This allows the sponge or other mechanical stage to catch larger particles before water reaches the porous biological media.

Don’t pack it too tightly Leave enough space for water to circulate around and through the rings.Over-packing biological media can restrict water movement and reduce the amount of water reaching the available surfaces.

Allow it to mature New media is not immediately biologically mature. Beneficial bacteria gradually establish themselves once the media is placed in a functioning aquarium.

Clean gently When established media requires cleaning, gently swish it in water removed from the aquarium during a water change. Avoid aggressive scrubbing that could unnecessarily disturb the established biological community.

Something Fishy recommends

Think of your filter as a team of different media, rather than asking one product to do everything.Mechanical media catches the waste you can see.RedBio H1 provides a home for the microorganisms that help process dissolved nitrogenous waste.Chemical media, when required, can address specific water-quality issues. For the best use of biological media, don’t treat it like filter wool.

You don’t need to replace established biological media every few weeks simply because it has been used. If the rings remain physically intact and water can still move through them, they can continue serving as biological media. And when cleaning them, protect the biological colony you’re trying to build.

Maintenance and replacement

RedBio H1 is intended as long-term biological filter media, rather than disposable mechanical media. There is no universal monthly replacement schedule. The rings can remain in the filter as long as they:

  • Remain physically intact.
  • Are not severely clogged.
  • Allow reasonable water flow.
  • Can be maintained without excessive deterioration.

Replace the media when it becomes significantly damaged, degraded or permanently clogged. In a mature aquarium, avoid replacing all established biological media at once, as doing so can remove a significant portion of the existing bacterial population.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the red colour affect aquarium water?

The colour itself should not be assumed to provide any water-treatment function. The media should be rinsed before use, and any initial fine dust should be removed.

How do I clean RedBio H1 without losing beneficial bacteria?

Once the media has become established, clean it gently rather than scrubbing it thoroughly.

During a water change, take some of the removed aquarium water and gently swish the rings in it to loosen accumulated debris. Avoid soap, detergents and aggressive cleaning.

The reason is simple: the beneficial bacteria living on the media are part of your biological filtration, so excessive cleaning can unnecessarily disturb the bacterial colony.

How long does it take for the media to become biologically active?

There is no single fixed timeframe. Colonisation depends on the aquarium, existing bacterial population, oxygen availability, water flow and other conditions.

Should I put RedBio H1 before or after the sponge?

Generally, place it after mechanical filtration so that larger debris is removed before water reaches the porous biological media.

What size are these filter rings?

Each ring is specified as 17 × 21 mm.

How do I use RedBio H1 in my aquarium filter?

Rinse the rings thoroughly before first use to remove loose dust. Place them in the biological filtration section of your filter, ideally after coarse mechanical media such as sponge or foam. This allows larger debris to be removed before water reaches the porous biological media.

Leave enough space for water to circulate through and around the rings. RedBio H1 needs time to become colonised by beneficial bacteria, so its biological filtration capacity develops as the aquarium matures.

Do I need to put RedBio H1 inside a filter-media bag?

Not necessarily. If your filter has a basket or chamber designed to hold loose media, the rings can be placed directly inside it.

A filter-media bag is useful when the filter does not have a dedicated media compartment or when you want to make removal and cleaning easier. Avoid packing the bag so tightly that water cannot flow freely through the media.

Can RedBio H1 reduce ammonia and nitrite?

It can support the biological process that reduces ammonia and nitrite, but it does not directly absorb them.

As beneficial bacteria establish on the porous media, they participate in the nitrogen cycle, converting ammonia into nitrite and nitrite into nitrate.

For an aquarium with an existing ammonia or nitrite problem, RedBio H1 should be considered part of the long-term biological filtration solution, not an instant treatment. Immediate water-quality problems still require appropriate aquarium maintenance and investigation of the underlying cause.

Can RedBio H1 replace my sponge or other filter media?

No. RedBio H1 serves a different purpose from mechanical media.

Sponge and filter foam primarily trap physical debris, while RedBio H1 provides surfaces for beneficial bacteria. For many filtration systems, using mechanical and biological media together provides a more complete filtration setup.
