Water Parameter Compatibility

Sansibar Stone is a naturally calcareous rock, meaning it may gradually increase pH, General Hardness (GH) and Carbonate Hardness (KH) over time. This characteristic makes it an excellent choice for freshwater fish that naturally thrive in alkaline, mineral-rich water, including many African Rift Lake Cichlids and other hard-water species.

Although its appearance resembles reef rock, Sansibar Stone is not recommended for marine or reef aquariums. It is intended as a freshwater decorative hardscape and should not be used as a replacement for premium marine reef rock specifically designed for saltwater systems.

If your aquarium houses soft-water species such as Discus, wild Bettas or Caridina shrimp that require low pH and low hardness, we recommend selecting an inert hardscape such as Running River Rock or Magic Volcano Black instead.

As with all natural stones, rinse thoroughly with clean water before placing them in the aquarium.

Gallery Pro Tip

One mistake many hobbyists make is placing Sansibar Stone with all of its cavities facing upwards. Instead, rotate each rock so that the largest openings face slightly forwards or sideways. This creates a more natural appearance, provides visible shelters for fish and helps reduce the accumulation of debris inside the rock.

For the most realistic layout, combine larger feature stones with smaller supporting pieces and partially bury the base stones into the substrate to create the impression of naturally weathered rock formations.
