Hikari Goldfish Gold Baby Pellet is a colour-enhancing floating food formulated for young goldfish and koi fry, with a small 1.7–2.0 mm pellet designed specifically for smaller fish. It can be fed to young Common Goldfish, Comets, Shubunkins and fancy goldfish such as Orandas, Ranchus, Ryukins, Fantails, Telescope/Black Moor and other varieties. Hikari also recommends it for koi fry. The formula combines a daily nutritional diet with Phaffia dried yeast and astaxanthin to support the development and expression of natural colour.
Designed for young goldfish
Pellet size matters when feeding young fish. A pellet that is too large can be difficult for smaller goldfish to pick up and consume properly. Hikari Goldfish Gold Baby uses a small Baby Pellet of approximately 1.7–2.0 mm, making it particularly suitable for growing goldfish and koi fry.
The food is designed to float, allowing you to observe feeding behaviour while your fish eat. This also makes it easier to control feeding and remove uneaten food from the aquarium.
Hikari recommends Goldfish Gold for all types of goldfish, so the food is not limited to one particular variety. It can be used for young Common Goldfish and Comets as well as fancy varieties including Oranda, Ranchu, Ryukin, Fantail, Telescope/Black Moor and Pearlscale. The same food can also be used for koi fry.

Colour enhancement
Goldfish Gold is formulated as a colour-enhancing diet and contains Phaffia dried yeast and astaxanthin, ingredients used in ornamental fish nutrition to support the development and expression of natural colour.
Hikari states that the food contains no artificial colour or flavour and that the red colour of the pellets comes from the raw ingredients.
A colour-enhancing food cannot change the genetic colour potential of a fish. Genetics, age, development, environment and overall husbandry all influence how a goldfish ultimately looks. Good nutrition can support natural colour development, but it is not a substitute for good aquarium care.

The formulation includes fish meal, flaked corn, rice bran, wheat flour, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, shrimp meal, brewer’s dried yeast, garlic, Phaffia dried yeast and astaxanthin, together with vitamins, minerals and other nutritional ingredients.
Hikari also includes stabilised vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals as part of the formulation.
How to feed Hikari Goldfish Gold Baby
Hikari recommends feeding young fish 2–4 times a day, offering only as much as the fish can consume within a few minutes. Uneaten food should be removed rather than being left to break down in the aquarium.
Young goldfish can benefit from several small feedings rather than one large feeding. However, goldfish are enthusiastic eaters and may continue looking for food even after they have received enough.
The correct amount depends on the number and size of fish, aquarium conditions, temperature and feeding frequency. Start conservatively and adjust according to how quickly the fish consume the food and the condition of the aquarium.
Hikari also recommends adjusting feeding when water temperatures are consistently below 10°C or above 30°C, as fish activity and metabolism are affected by temperature.
What about floating food and fancy goldfish?
Hikari Goldfish Gold Baby is a floating food, and this can be useful because feeding activity is easy to observe.
For most fish, this is straightforward. However, some individual fancy goldfish may have difficulty with surface feeding or may gulp aggressively while eating. Fancy goldfish such as Orandas, Ranchus and Telescope/Black Moor have different body shapes from streamlined varieties such as Common Goldfish and Comets.
