Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, parrots can eat chilli. Birds do not experience the burning sensation from capsaicin in the same way mammals do, which is why chilli can be safely used as a flavour in parrot foods and treats. HARI specifically includes chilli flakes in Chili Snaps.
The chilli in this product is therefore not intended to make the treat painfully hot for your bird.
Chili Snaps are small, crunchy, oven-baked parrot treats made with seeds, chilli flakes and peanuts and blended with Tropican. They are designed to be easy for parrots to hold and are particularly useful for foraging activities and training rewards.
HARI describes them as a complementary food, not as the bird's main diet.
The Chili Snaps recipe contains approximately 9% Tropican Lifetime in the finished product. This gives the treat a formulated-food component alongside its seeds, grains and other ingredients.
However, the presence of Tropican does not make Chili Snaps a replacement for your parrot's complete everyday diet.
HARI lists Chili Snaps for all pet birds and all bird sizes, from very small through large parrots.
The individual pieces are designed to be easy to hold, but very small birds may benefit from having the treat broken into smaller pieces rather than being given a whole snap.
Yes. This is one of the intended uses.
The small crunchy pieces can be used as positive-reinforcement rewards for behaviours such as stepping up, recall, target training or accepting handling. HARI specifically recommends Little Foragers for training rewards.
Because treats should remain a small part of the diet, breaking a snap into smaller pieces can be useful during repeated training sessions.
Yes. This is arguably one of the best ways to use the product.
Rather than simply placing the treat in the regular food bowl, you can hide small pieces in a foraging toy, paper cup, safe cardboard or another bird-safe enrichment setup so that the bird has to search and work for the reward.
HARI specifically identifies Little Foragers as suitable for foraging enrichment activities.
HARI recommends feeding Little Foragers in moderation, with treats making up no more than 5% of the bird's total daily food consumption.
There isn't one universal number of snaps per day because parrots vary considerably in size, activity and normal food intake.
For a small parrot, breaking one snap into smaller reward pieces can be a better approach than giving several whole pieces.
Yes. HARI states that Little Foragers can be served dry or moistened to cage and aviary birds.
The dry version provides the characteristic crunchy texture and is particularly convenient for holding, training and foraging. If moistened, remove uneaten portions rather than leaving damp food sitting in the cage.
Yes. Peanuts are part of the recipe, along with wheat, oats, millet, canola seed, flaxseed, sunflower ingredients and other components. HARI also states that the product is manufactured in a facility that packages products containing known priority allergens.
If your bird has a known food allergy or sensitivity, review the complete ingredient list with your avian veterinarian before feeding.
No. It is a treat/complementary food.
Although Chili Snaps contains Tropican and provides protein, fat and other nutrients, HARI specifically classifies it as a treat and recommends limiting treats to no more than 5% of total daily food consumption.
Your parrot's normal diet should remain its primary source of nutrition.
Yes. There is no special restriction based on keeping the bird in India.
The bigger consideration is storage, particularly during India's hot and humid weather. After opening, seal the pouch and store it in a cool, dry place, as recommended by HARI.
If the treat becomes damp or develops an unusual smell, discard it rather than feeding it.
