Deltec 600 Series Protein Skimmer — 600i & 600ix. Precision protein skimming from a company that helped define the technology. For a serious marine and reef aquarium, a protein skimmer is not simply an air pump making bubbles. It is a carefully balanced air-water separation system in which bubble generation, bubble residence time, water movement, reaction-chamber geometry and foam stability determine how effectively dissolved and surface-active organic compounds can be concentrated and removed. Deltec has been developing filtration equipment for marine aquariums since 1980 and describes itself as a pioneer in marine aquaristics. The Deltec 600 Series brings that engineering approach into a compact internal-sump skimmer designed for 200–600 litre marine and reef aquariums.

The engineering behind the Deltec 600
A skimmer is only as good as its air-water interaction. Protein skimming works because organic compounds with surface-active properties can accumulate at the interface between air and water. The Deltec 600 therefore does not simply aim to move aquarium water through a chamber. Its pump creates the air-water mixture that forms the bubble field, while the reaction chamber gives that mixture an environment in which the bubbles can rise and interact with the surrounding aquarium water.
The official Deltec specification gives the 600i a maximum air draw of 900 L/h, with 500 L/h stated as its optimal continuous air volume. The 600ix is specified at 450 L/h.
That distinction is important.
Maximum air draw and optimal continuous operating air are not the same number. For an experienced reef keeper, this is much more useful information than simply advertising the highest possible air-flow figure.
Deltec 600i — controlled DC skimming
The 600i uses Deltec’s DCC 2 pump operating at 24 V DC, controlled through the SWC 2 controller. Deltec specifies:
- 9–21 W power consumption
- 900 L/h maximum air
- 500 L/h optimal continuous air
- 5-stage continuous control
This gives the aquarist control over the pump’s operating level rather than forcing the skimmer to run at one fixed output. That controllability can be particularly useful when the organic load of a reef changes — for example, after changes in livestock, feeding or nutrient-management strategy. The objective is not necessarily to run the skimmer at maximum output all the time.
The objective is to find the operating point that produces the foam behaviour appropriate for your aquarium.
Deltec 600ix — simple AC operation
The 600ix uses Deltec’s DCS 400 pump running at 230 V AC.
Its official specifications are:
- 9 W power consumption
- 450 L/h maximum/continuous air
- no external pump controller
The 600ix therefore takes a different approach from the 600i.
Rather than paying for variable DC control, the 600ix is aimed at the marine and reef keeper who prefers a simple, efficient and fixed-output skimmer configuration. Neither configuration should automatically be considered “better.” They are designed for different operating preferences.
The cylindrical reaction chamber
The 600 Series uses a 125 mm diameter cylindrical body. This consistent-diameter reaction chamber is important to the way the skimmer manages the rising air/water mixture. Instead of forcing the bubble column through a progressively narrowing chamber, the cylindrical body provides a consistent path for the bubbles as they rise.
This helps create a controlled environment for:
air injection → bubble formation → bubble rise → organic adsorption → foam concentration → skimmate collection
The objective is to give the bubble population useful contact with the water while maintaining a stable foam head.
Deltec’s hollow-base engineering – One of the less obvious engineering features of the Deltec design is its base. The hollow-chamber base is not simply a stand. It forms part of the way the air/water mixture is introduced and managed within the reaction chamber. The engineering objective is to influence the flow entering the body, reduce unnecessary turbulence and help maintain a more controlled bubble environment. This matters because a protein skimmer is not improved simply by producing more turbulence.
The useful objective is controlled contact between water and bubbles. Excessive turbulence can work against stable foam formation and can contribute to microbubbles escaping back into the aquarium.
Double Base Anti-Flood + Safety Overflow – The Deltec 600 Series incorporates both a Double Base Anti-Flood system and a safety overflow. This is an important piece of engineering for equipment that operates continuously in a sump. If the internal water level rises beyond the intended operating condition, the overflow system provides a controlled route for excess water and helps reduce the possibility of the collection cup being flooded.
For marine and reef keepers, this is not a glamorous specification — but it is exactly the sort of feature that becomes valuable when the aquarium is running unattended.
Correct sump depth is part of the design – Deltec specifies a 150–250 mm (15–25 cm) water level for the 600i and 600ix. This should not be treated as an optional recommendation. The sump water depth affects the hydraulic pressure around the skimmer and therefore influences its internal operating water level and foam head. If the sump level is unstable, skimmer performance can also become unstable.
For this reason, the Deltec 600 should ideally be installed in a sump section with a consistent water level. An appropriately configured automatic top-off system can be particularly useful in marine and reef aquariums where evaporation causes daily water-level changes.

There is one practical detail worth remembering: Deltec notes that approximately 15 mm additional vertical clearance is required for removing the collection cup. So when measuring your sump cabinet, don’t allow exactly 510 mm and assume the job is done.

A protein skimmer operates in one of the most demanding environments in an aquarium: warm saltwater containing organic compounds, minerals and calcium deposits. Over time, deposits can accumulate on the pump, impeller and air path.Deltec therefore designs the 600 Series around practical maintenance.
The pump can be removed without complicated tools, while the CSM 600 manual cleaning system (not included with skimmer – to be bought additionally) is supported for keeping the skimmer neck clean. This is an important part of the Deltec philosophy:

You want variable pump control, a 24 V DC pump and the ability to adjust the skimmer’s operating intensity as your reef’s nutrient load changes.

Don’t choose purely by air-flow numbers
The 600i’s 900 L/h figure is its maximum air draw; Deltec specifies 500 L/h as the optimal continuous air volume. The 600ix operates at 450 L/h.
Therefore, comparing the models purely as 900 vs 450 = twice the skimming performance would be technically misleading. Skimmer performance is determined by the complete air/water system, not one number.

The Deltec 600 Series is available in two skimmer configurations — 600i and 600ix — with the option to purchase each model either as the skimmer alone or bundled with the CSM 600 Manual Cleaning System.
